PREPARE WALLS
Clearing the workspace is best to start with, to give yourself the best conditions possible. Move large furniture to the center of the room, remove everything that is on the wall you intend to wallpaper, and also prepare all the tools necessary. Smooth Surface
To ensure a successful wallpaper installation, beginning with a smooth wall is crucial. Start by removing hooks, nails, and light switch plates, which may leave holes and raised areas. These imperfections could affect the appearance of your wallpaper. Fill any holes or craters with spackle and sand down any bumps, resulting in a smooth and even surface. While a slight texture is generally acceptable, deeper textures should be smoothed. This ensures that your wallpaper adheres uniformly, minimizing the risk of future issues such as peeling and preventing moisture-related concerns like mold growth.
Cleaning
Cleaning your wall is the next essential step, and it should be done before and immediately before installation. After sanding your wall, tiny dust particles may remain, and it’s important not to paint or install over them. For the initial cleaning, use a robust cleaner like sugar soap or TSP (trisodium phosphate) to eliminate grease and other buildup. If your wall already has paint, a hot water solution with a small amount of vinegar will suffice. Additionally, perform a final cleaning with a soft, damp cloth 24 to 48 hours before you begin wallpaper installation.
Paint and Primer
Selecting the right paint is crucial. Eggshell, satin, or semi-gloss paints work best with wallpaper. Avoid applying wallpaper directly to latex paint, as it may tear during removal. Similarly, refrain from installing wallpaper directly onto drywall. For paste-the-wall wallpaper, drywall can absorb the paste, leaving inadequate adhesive for the paper, and applying a primer to seal the wall before pasting is advisable. Primer also prevents moisture absorption into the wall, guarding against mold and fungus growth.
Primers are typically available in white, which is suitable for light-colored designs. However, consider having the primer tinted to match if your wallpaper features darker colors. This reduces the risk of visible white seams between wallpaper strips.
When applying wallpaper to freshly painted walls, wait at least 30 days for the paint to set fully. Primer, on the other hand, dries quickly, usually within a day or so.
Knowing how to prepare your wall for wallpaper is essential to maximize the value of your purchase. Taking these precautions beforehand ensures a smooth installation process and minimizes potential complications. So, when the time comes to bring your dream wallpaper to life, start by preparing your walls, and success will surely follow.
